Photo

DAVID BARTON was born in Winchester, Hampshire, England, in 1983, moving to Gloucester in 1987. Between 1995 and 2002 he attended the Crypt Grammar School in the city, a school with an established musical tradition that offered many opportunities for composition and performance. During that time, he studied organ with Paul Derrett and flute with Janet Baldwin. He also studied voice with Phillip Colls and more recently with Lesley-Jane Rogers.

Since leaving school he has pursued a career in instrumental and vocal teaching. In addition to running a thriving private practice in Gloucester, he was organist at Quedgeley Methodist Church between 1998 and 2004, at St. Luke’s Methodist Church until February 2008, and has been at St. John’s Northgate Methodist Church since 2005. He has also served as the musical director for a number of stage productions.

He holds certificates or diplomas from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Victoria College of Music, the Royal School of Church Music (in association with the University of Wales, Bangor), the Norwich School of Church Music, the ICMA, the National College of Music, the Victoria College of Music, and the London College of Music.

His many compositions span a variety of genres and have been performed in venues as varied as New York, Kansas City, San Francisco, Montreal, Melbourne and the Republic of Ireland, in addition to those in the UK.

This two-part setting of the traditional text with a new melody is suited to a wide range of treble ensembles, especially children's choirs; it can also be performed as a duet.
